In the late 1960s, Amsterdam became a Mecca for hippies. Sitting at the National Monument in Dam Square was accepted as a reflection of the freedom the city represented and this became the place where students, street evangelists, buskers and hippies would gather during the day and sometimes into the night. Some of those in authority though took a less tolerant approach.
